Florals: Tulips No. 3 (4x6, framed)
Tulips became a significant symbol to me when I first began healing from a considerable trauma in my teen years. One day in that season, I was so disheartened to come home and see my mom’s early spring blooms wrecked and flattened to the ground after one of Utah’s famous late season snow storms. It felt like everything was destroyed in the wake of my recent trauma, even the flowers! The next day though, the tulips were standing back up, strong as ever. I touched the stems and leaves and was shocked to feel their strength even though the day before they’d been mashed in the dirt. From then on, they kept cropping up for me in significant moments.
To me, they symbolize softness and strength, heartiness and hope. While delicate and soft, they are able to withstand the rough transition between winter and spring, and are amongst first blooms of the new season after the bareness of winter. The arrival of tulips in the spring is one of my most highly anticipated moments of the season, so I drew a few while waiting impatiently for them.
